Local Action in USA - Vote for Your Favorite BWB Club
When designing Local Action Projects, we ask students to look into their own community and propose viable changes that resonate most with them. Today we will spotlight the project from the Walker School BWB Club in Georgia, USA. It is led by student Alexa Campos and moderated by Dr. Lynn Murray:
"Our Local Action Project addressed food insecurity and supported vulnerable members both locally in Atlanta and globally. It focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal: Zero Hunger. Throughout the year, we hosted two bake sales, raising $500 to support a woman-owned Nigerian hair business. She is the sole provider and caregiver for her family, who faced significant financial hardship and food insecurity. Our fundraising helped provide her with additional income, allowing her to afford necessities such as food.
One of our proudest accomplishments was our inaugural partnership with the Sandwich Project. After months of planning and obtaining school approval, our members assembled and donated +200 sandwiches for people experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. We also continued our three-year partnership with a local rabbit shelter, volunteering year-round, especially during finals season to support both animal welfare and student well-being.
Throughout the project, we overcame challenges involving school approval, budgeting, and member participation by planning ahead and communicating consistently with school administrators and community partners. These experiences strengthened our teamwork and problem-solving skills, while demonstrating that lasting community impact stems from consistency. Most importantly, our project empowered members to become active leaders committed to serving their local community beyond a single event."
